WHAT IS THE TRIA 4X HAIR REMOVAL LASER?

The TRIA 4X is an at-home hair removal device that uses diode laser technology rather than IPL, with a precision 810nm wavelength designed to target hair at the follicle.

One of the biggest differences is its power, delivering up to 233% more power than leading IPL devices. The TRIA 4X is also the only FDA-cleared at-home laser for permanent hair reduction.

What is Permanent Hair Reduction?

Permanent hair reduction is defined as a long-term, stable reduction in hair regrowth following a full course of laser treatments, reducing the need for ongoing hair removal methods such as shaving and waxing.

HOW DO YOU USE THE TRIA 4X?

The TRIA 4X has been redesigned to make at-home treatments easier, with a more ergonomic design, rubberised grip handle and LCD display. It’s also cordless, with a full charge providing around 30 minutes of treatment time, making it easier to move between treatment areas.

There is also a built-in skin sensor on the base of the device to check if your skin tone is compatible. Simply place this against the area you want to treat and, if suitable, it will unlock the device before use.

Before starting treatment, the area should be shaved 24–48 hours beforehand, with skin clean and dry. TRIA also recommends applying their Phytograph Gel to help make the skin feel less sensitive during treatment.

The LCD display shows your five intensity levels, which allows the treatment to be adjusted depending on the area and your comfort level.

Choose your intensity level and place the treatment tip flat against the skin. The TRIA 4X will make a quick flash and beep when each treatment point is complete, then you can move on to the next area with a slight overlap to ensure even coverage.

It also counts up as you do each successful laser pulse. If it doesn’t take, it will make a buzzer-type noise, a laser gameshow as such!

For larger areas such as the legs, TRIA recommends dividing the skin into sections to make it easier to keep track of where you have treated. White eyeliner can also be used to mark out sections, avoid black eyeliner, which can interfere with the laser.

The treatments can be done every two weeks to target hairs at different stages of the growth cycle.

DOES THE AT-HOME LASER HURT?

How the TRIA 4X feels will vary from person to person, as everyone has a different level of sensitivity and some treatment areas may feel more noticeable than others.

You can start on a lower setting and gradually increase through the five intensity levels to the highest level that feels comfortable. You can also use the Phytograph Gel before treatment, which is designed to make the skin feel less sensitive.

As the amount of hair decreases in treatment areas, the sensation will also decrease, so you may be able to use a higher treatment level after the initial treatments.

IS THE TRIA 4X SUITABLE FOR ME?

One of the biggest things to note for this type of device is that it isn’t suitable for every skin tone or hair colour. The laser works by targeting melanin, so TRIA recommends the device for Fitzpatrick skin tones I–IV and naturally light brown to black hair.

It is not suitable for Fitzpatrick skin tones V–VI and is unlikely to be effective on blonde, red, white or grey hair due to the lower levels of melanin. The built-in skin sensor checks your skin before each treatment and will only unlock the device when the skin tone is suitable.

Laser hair removal may also appeal to those who experience razor bumps, ingrown hairs or ‘strawberry legs’ from shaving. By reducing hair growth and the need to shave as frequently, it may help where hair removal is contributing to visible bumps and irritation.

HOW LONG DOES THE TRIA 4X TAKE TO WORK?

You can start to see visible results after just two treatments, with up to 75% hair reduction, whilst up to 100% hair reduction can be seen after eight treatments.

TRIA recommends a course of 6–8 treatments, carried out every two weeks, with results varying from person to person.

• First three months: There will be a gradual reduction in the number of hairs with each treatment, whilst regrowth should begin to appear lighter and finer.
• After three months: Hair follicles successfully deactivated by the TRIA 4X should no longer produce hair. Occasional touch-ups or further treatments can be carried out if necessary.
